Even to look into the Cursed Field is dangerous: terror may drive you mad, or twist you into something monstrous. Only acid-divers can descend into its depths and harvest the dew from its floor—a precious chemical essence. Field dew is used to make expanders, which grant a person a fleeting state of perfection. It is brewed into rejuvenating potions for wealthy gentlemen and their companions. Some say it can even yield an elixir of new life.
At the heart of this story is Lefty, a master harvester of Field dew. On Christmas morning he returns from a deep dive, laden with a rich haul, to learn that Lisovskaya, his mentor in the arts of the Field, has become a living doll and is killing people; that a bounty has been placed on his head; and that the bloodthirsty magnate Scylla is preparing to marry his beloved Margarita.
Should he flee the city with his spoils and begin again—or risk his life to steal the bride from the altar? Meanwhile, a sodden blizzard closes around the city, and the nightmares of the Cursed Field lay claim to its people’s souls.
