The sirens are daughters of the unimagined beasts of the dark age. They survived the Flood and settled in the Dunava delta. There they lived at liberty in the warm, shallow waters, feeding on fish and wildfowl and abducting young men from neighbouring peoples for their needs and the continuation of their kind. If a boy was born, they gave him to his young father and killed them both. The girls they kept. So they lived, hiding from their enemies in the reed wilderness of the boundless delta, until a landless grandson of a god, Stavr Swiftwing, arrived in their domain.
